Today, my mom and I got to share space at @themeteor’s #MeetTheMoment, exploring the question of what’s changed and what hasn’t before and after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Our lives show that much is different, and yet so much remains the same. There is still exclusion, inaccessibility, discrimination. But I know our lives have both become better because of activists fighting for rights and justice, and because we have each other.
My mom taught me how to advocate—a skill that carries us forward. And she says that I taught her disability pride—an identity that keeps us going.
Image descriptions:
1. My mom and I on stage, both sitting in our wheelchairs, speaking into microphones. I’m in a maroon floral dress and she’s in a bright green shirt and black pants. Behind us is a screen with photos of us from childhood at the same age that show how similar we looked as kids.
2. Still on stage, but with a photo of us laughing and holding hands behind us.
3. My mom and I sitting next to each other in our wheelchairs in front of the step and repeat background, which is brightly multicolored with phrases including “our futures, our planet, our rights, our bodies, our democracy.”
