"Making the series has raised the question of whether that way of working with the medium of film is also viable, how much narrative a series needs, and whether it needs to be didactic at all. Does the audience need to actually learn how to make drawings? There is a lot of demonstration of the practicalities of how things are made in the studio, but I would say this is not a lesson in art-making. At its heart this is really a series about the optimism and agency of making, itself. There’s an inherent optimism in the activity of taking the blank piece of paper at the beginning and having something at the end. If there's a central argument I have to offer and engage audiences, it would be the defence of an optimism of making.” WK The first three films of “SELF-PORTRAIT AS A COFFEE POT”, a series of nine films which explore life in the studio and the process of making, will be screened at the London Film Festival today.
