The exhibition teaser for 'Out of Control: The Concrete Art of Skateboarding' is on display now at the Audain Art Museum. The downstairs component, in the Tom & Teresa Gautreau Galleries, will open to the public on September 17. Experience the captivating intersection between contemporary art and skateboarding.
Karin Bubaš is one of five artists featured in this teaser. Her work addresses female subjectivity, and she makes photographs that respond to tropes born out of the history of painting, film, fashion, and advertising. Bubaš presents two large panoramas in this exhibition, and stages a solitary figure against a defeatured landscape in each. Shot at Tsawwassen Mills, a shopping mall built on Indigenous land next to a seaside suburb of Vancouver, 'Nose Manual (After Ellen O'Neal)' (2021) shifts the focus from that of still contemplation to that of action. In this image, we see a woman with blue hair attempting to mimic the iconic nose wheelie made famous by skateboarder Ellen O'Neal in the seventies. O'Neal is arguably the first and most famous woman to break into what was otherwise a male-dominated scene.
'Out of Control' is organized by the Audain Art Museum in Whistler, British Columbia. The exhibition is guest curated by Patrik Andersson, in collaboration with the Museum’s Gail & Stephen A. Jarislowsky Curator Kiriko Watanabe.
