Before the summer, I got a lot responses to this picture and I’ve been meaning to post it here so others could see and share if you resonated. (And thanks to @heysleepybaby for sharing it too!) 🙏🏼 If you missed the story, the background is that I had attended a talk on kids and screens/social media and one of the reminders was that besides for being more mindful of the time our kids spend on screens, we also need to be cognizant of *our own habits.* This slide was shared from a child psychologist/counselor recalling what her child clients were telling her about their parents’ relationships with their own phones. 🥺 I realize that my generation is kind of the first parent group to navigate raising young children around social media and smart phones and it’s. So. Hard. 😔 I also realize that I’m just as prone to falling susceptible to the dopamine traps and endless scrolls myself and that I have to curb my own habits. Because if I can’t do it, how do I expect it to be any easier for a child whose brain is not fully developed? I don’t think this was meant to make anyone feel bad, but it does invite us to look up from our phones and take an inward look at ourselves to see if we like what is happening or where it’s all leading. If I’m honest, I don’t like it at all, but I also know it’s easier said than done to give it all up. That being said, I do have goals to be more mindful of how much time I spend on my phone and how much attention I’m giving to my kid when she’s around. There are times where using the phone is unavoidable, but returning the phone to its place of being more of a TOOL instead of a distraction is really what I want to see happening in my life at least. 🙏🏼 I hope this might be some food for thought or conversation starters amongst each other. I don’t claim to know what I’m doing, but I can say I’m trying to learn. ❤️ And if you want to hear more discussion about this journey, please check out the Bonus episode (# 5) on @healingthetigress that I did with my therapist cohost @healingwithpeggy. It was just released yesterday! 🙂🙏🏼
