LA County Sheriff Robert Luna announced yesterday that his department must comply with federal judicial warrants to transfer inmates to ICE custody. During a press conference, Luna addressed community concerns regarding the department's cooperation with federal immigration authorities. He emphasized that transfers occur only when presented with a federal judicial warrant signed by a judge, in accordance with California law and county policy.
The sheriff's department transferred 20 inmates to ICE between May and June. Most of these inmates faced serious charges, including attempted murder, robbery, rape, and sexual battery.
Despite California's sanctuary laws limiting cooperation with ICE on civil matters, federal judicial warrants override local sanctuary policies. The transfers mark the first time the sheriff's department has handed over inmates to ICE since early 2020. #iheartradio
