Tom Shannon ‘Pi Phi’, 2022 Stainless Steel, Granite Private Commission Menorca, Balearic Islands, Spain Tom’s sculpture describes both Pi and Phi (aka the Golden Ratio) as shown in the curvatures of the width and length of an ellipsoid... the two ratios’ curves blend into each other as the sculpture rotates and floats “weightlessly” in the wind. ~ 2,000 kg balancing on one point. The sculpture reflects the sky, the earth, the ocean... both Pi and Phi are usually explained as number sequences (3.145... 1.618...) that are irresolvable, infinite or ‘transcendental’... similar to the most beautiful things found in the natural world and our lives... so here too in form. Enormous gratitude to everyone who helped this sculpture along. 3+ years in the making... especially to René Servisi and Antoni Areny on finish-line logistics and fabrication, and our steadfast crane-op Pitou, for helping to get ‘Pi Phi’ installed over last month bouncing around Catalonia... it was a mission... Congrats Tom ⚖️🍻
