Incredibly powerful weekend commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the murder of Vincent Chin. Vincent was a young Chinese American man in Detroit who was killed because he was assumed to be Japanese during the decline of the American auto industry on January 19, 1982. Though his killers admitted to literally beating his brains out with a baseball bat - the week before he was to be married - they were only sentenced to probation and a $3000 fine because the judge in the case, Charles Kaufman, said of the two white defendants, “These weren’t the kind of men you send to jail.” To this day, neither Ronald Ebens nor Michael Nitz ever spent a day in prison for their brutal attack. There is so much more to this story, and you can learn more by watching @rtajimapena’s brilliant film “Who Killed Vincent Chin?” that happens to air TONIGHT (Monday) on your local @pbs station.
