IYKYK. Toronto Foundation. Without a solid foundation, everything you build upon it will one day crumble. Yet, too many, while celebrating the beautiful views from the penthouse, so often forget or have no reverence for the foundation it’s all been built on. That’s why it was extra beautiful to see @champagnepapi & @djcharlieb drop the “All Canadian North Stars” flyer with names like @maestrofreshwes on it to launch this years OVO Fest and even more-so to hear his introductory speech. Funny thing is Drake mentions “when he used to perform at Manifesto back in the day”... but to this date, we have not had the pleasure. His name did grace the flyer of Year 1’s (2007) LEGENDARY LIVE MIXTAPE, but even after I called the 4 different numbers I had for him when all the artists were walking from the Sheraton to Nathan Phillip Square to perform, I could not reach him. What he did from that year forward is nothing short of historic. And to pay homage to the foundation like he did last night, no mans can mention all the things he said in his speech without living it. And shout out the foundation that goes even further back. Michie Mee, Dream Warriors, Ron Nelson, Rumble, Jon Bronski, The Fresh Arts Program and on and on. The continuum of culture in Toronto runs deep and the fruits of all those seeds planted so many years ago are feeding the world right now.
