‘Moving images have become part of the contemporary human condition, informing the collective imaginary and material world... [these tools] help me observe, understand, and interpret the world as well as conjure alternative possibilities.’
- Ruth Maclennan (@maclennanruth)
Responding to the theme of climate, three new artist’s films are now screening both online and in our auditorium as part of the Artist’s Film International (AFI) project.
Featured here are stills from Treeline (2021) by artist Ruth Maclennan. The work is a compilation of hundreds of hours of footage of forests submitted by people across the world. Through this infinite panorama of trees, the work is a reminder of the swathes of green that encircle the planet, and a monument to the shared resources and futures that bind people together.
AFI is a collaborative project featuring film, video and animation around the world. Established by Whitechapel Gallery in 2008, AFI pools the knowledge of 20 global partner organisations, each organisation selects an exciting recent work by an artist from their region which is shared amongst the network. Previous themes have included care, technology, conflict and collaboration.
This season's programme features the work of Flatform (selected by GAMeC, Bergamo), Ruth Maclennan (selected by Whitechapel Gallery) and Emilija Škarnulytė (selected by CAC, Vilnius)
Artist’s Film International: Climate runs until 5 February 2023
