Replying to @Jasmine Marie there are so many diseases, illnesses, disorders that could start from choices that end up NEEDING treatment. This isnt exclusive to SUD. Some diabetes stems from eating choices. Some cancers stem from smoking but they dont deserve treatment any less because they smoked cigarettes? Some people with eating struggles NEED treatment and weight loss surgery despite it possibly stemming from choices. I needed a hysterectomy that stemmed from unprotected sex. How many people need treatment for STI’s that possibly stemmed from a sex addiction? My point is it doesn’t matter whether a choice did or did not lead to what is happening today. The fact of the matter is I have SUD. My medication treats substance use disorder and it does so very very well with very high success rates. It reduces the mortality rate by over 50%. If somebody gets off of this medication before they are ready their chance of relapse and death is a lot more likely.
