It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of legendary actress Nichelle Nichols, who passed away today at the age 89.
Nichelle had quite a diverse career, working in film and on the stage, but she's undoubtedly known best for her performance as #StarTrek's Nyota Uhura.
Working aboard the USS Enterprise made her a pop-culture icon, but it also prepared her to play an important part in real-life space exploration by working with #NASA, and changing the space program forever.
The astronaut corp was an all boys club, an all white anglosaxon men organization, with no interest in including poc or women in their team. Being a restless activist, Nichelle challenged the rules of the Aeronautics and Space Administration, and created 'Women in Motion', a non-profit organization that was in charge of recruiting African American, Asian, Latino and Native American women who aspired to work at NASA. She personally took it upon herself to support these women and encourage them to pursue a career in the space agency.
Thanks to Nichelle, science fiction became science fact. And she made of NASA, as inclusive a workspace as the Star Tresk series was.
At one point in her career, Nichelle thought of quitting Star Trek to explore other facets of her career, Martin Luther King found out and confronted her. He implored her to continue working on the series, so that all the little black girls would continue to have a role model on television.
These and other stories of her life can be seen in the documentary “Woman in Montion” (2019).
RIP Nyota Uhura ❤️
