This is a story about an unsuccessful attempt to get Taylor Swift tickets.
I wanted 2 wheelchair accessible tickets through the @capitalone presale for me and my friend to see @taylorswift at @metlifestadium. I spent over 2 hours in @ticketmaster's virtual queue. When I reached the front, no accessible tickets showed up.
I called Ticketmaster's accessible seating line. The guy said I couldn't order over the phone. He told me to order two inaccessible tickets online, show up at the venue, and tell them to move us because they're required by law to accommodate us.
Well Ticketmaster, this might be a newsflash, but you're legally required to accommodate us, too! According to Department of Justice regulations implementing the Americans with Disabilities Act, "Venues are required to sell tickets for accessible seats in the same manner and under the same conditions as all other ticket sales."
Laws be damned, I guess. When I hung up, I'd lost my place in the queue.
Now let's say for argument's sake that accessible tickets were available but had already sold out. This is still frustrating because it points to artificial scarcity of accessible options. Disabled people are always forced to fight over limited resources in a world not built to include us.
So yes, this is still a story about an unsuccessful attempt to get T-Swift tickets. But really (and no, I don't think I'm being too dramatic) it's about so much more.
It's about the fact that ableism and inaccessibility are at the core of every system, from monopolies like Ticketmaster, to transportation networks like NYC's @mta (which claims it'll get around to mostly complying with the ADA by 2055), to drug companies that limit access to lifesaving medications.
Can I survive without seeing T-Swift in concert? For sure. Is it inconsequential in the grand scheme of things? Absolutely. But I'm bone-tired of coming up against inaccessibility and blatant flouting of the law at every turn.
