My favourite Easter bunny!!
The most famous work by New York based artist and polymath Daniel Brush. And surely One of the most famous and game-changing jewels of the late 20th century.
On top of the carved pink Bakelite-type plastic bangle lazes a beautifully sculpted bunny rabbit smothered in Argyle pink diamonds .. the extraordinary sweet candy-coloured diamonds discovered in the Late 70s Western Australia had just come on stream in the late 80s. They provided the perfect vehicle for Brush’s series of jewels and objects that captured his childhood memories of the pink plastic toys and accessories sold in his father’s children’s wear store . He wanted to recreate a pink plastic dresser set for ‘big girls’ as he told me when I spent time with him and his wife Olivia while researching the book Daniel Brush -Jewels Sculpture. The Bunny bangle was the centrepiece of the set, and when a gem dealer friend handed him a parcel of 1000 carats of the new and thrilling argyle pink diamonds he knew they would create the effect he wanted of five-and-dime Woolworth toys ... as ever challenging our perceptions of preciousness..
For another sweet Easter treat swipe to see his Jelly Beans set of bangle and earrings . Characteristically charming, surprising, childlike yet ultra-sophisticated and instantly engaging . Look @vivarium.jewelry for an extract from the book
