This date is an opportunity to educate people and promote awareness about the Indian Residential School system and the impact this system had on Indigenous communities for more than a century on Turtle Island, and which still does today. Starting in the 1880's and for much of the 20th century, more than 150,000 children from hundreds of indigenous communities across Turtle Island were forcibly taken from their parents by the government and sent to what were called Residential Schools.
