Dad, today is 2 years since your heart slowed to a stop. How fragile life is, and yet you made a lasting impression on us and others in the world we live within. You see, we are your legacy, each one of us stepping forward with your spirit guiding us. Being the child of a multi-cultural love union has, for me, meant I was ready to fight anyone who challenged our presence, questioned our validity, or risked our safety because we didn’t fit into one box or another based on preconceived ideals. Dad was able to continuously maintain his grace, opinion and uphold his Jamaican Maroon strength throughout his time here. A lot of you know how fucking tiring it can be to always think about race, class, economic divides and injustices. But we do. I’m not sure where I am going with these words. I think I’m still working out what it means to uphold a memory of a man I miss so dearly and yet I see his influence in his grandchildren so strongly now he is gone. It’s music in the making. Being with and speaking to my sisters this past week, seeing their important work to help others. Zaka supporting and guiding teenagers so not to fall in between the cracks and Katryn advocating for children and families in need as well as training the gatekeepers on race relations, sexual identity and empathy. They save lives and are raising some dope kids. When I look at Jeff & Dee’s grandchildren my heart truly swells, and the future feels bright.
