Around 2008 I had the chance to work with the incredible genius artist/photographer @alimahdaviparis 🙌🙌🙌🙌 again for @dazedfashion 2007-8 was still post grunge, and the bigger indie magazines were quite anti "Hollywood type" glamour - too constructed! instead the vibe you were supposed to go for in fashion photos, was almost like unstaged street fashion. I understood this aesthetic but always felt it was a little disingenuous, after all, there was a stylist, hair stylist, makeup, lighting, a beautiful model and retouching, unless you were following the great genius Peter Lindbergh who NEVER retouched. So although the idea was to represent “elevated real life” fashion, there was not much “real life” about it?? I think this is why the great Ali Mahdavi and I got on so well, our careers were both ignited by the legendary glamour of Hollywood, which crept in even when we tried to be normal/street! I always had to behave myself doing fashion, feeling boundaries of what I thought would be acceptable MU in each editorial context. I still represented the 80’s-only 20 years ago! 😱😱😱god forbid!!! 😳not far enough in the past to be cool again! so fashion editors were VERY wary of me that I might do something over the top and 80s!! There were only a few MUA’s that were doing creative MU work on Fashion shoots for major magazines- the geniuses- @thealexbox @thevalgarland and @patmcgrathreal 🙌🙌🙌🙌 around this time, the rest of us were taking chances on really REALLY Indie magazines. For me this shoot was all about working with Ali, the incredible stylist @catherinebaba 🙌🙌🙌🙌 always inspiring !! genius hair stylist Laurent Phillipon and the incredible outfits from the archives of @manfredthierrymugler and Victor and Rolf, the model Masha had eyes like an IG filter- absolutely huge!!
