It’s #NationalOnlyChildDay, and this week I was a guest on a podcast where the host talked about how it seems we don’t celebrate or hear about the happiness of single children enough as we should. She mentioned it seems like it’s missing from the narrative and stories that we conjure up when we think of only children. And I couldn’t agree more. 💯 It’s why I think I had a hard time coming to peace with re-envisioning my family size at first…because I just didn’t know how great it could be too. It’s taken me awhile to heal from PPD but I’m finally much more at peace. So I’d like to take a moment today to celebrate my one and only, and the beauty of being One and Won.❤️ I think as more families choose to have just one, they find it’s just as beautiful and happy. And I’ll share a little story from our recent trip to Hawaii for spring break: We got seated next to another family who we didn’t know for a teppanyaki dinner, and I subtly noticed there were 3 of them too. A little boy close in age to my daughter was sitting in between his parents, just like my daughter was sandwiched between us. The restaurant did a belated birthday candle and song for my daughter after the dinner show, and that’s when we really started talking with the other family. Their son also just had a birthday the month prior—turns out he was a year older than my daughter. Finally, the dad looked at us nervously and said, “So…do you think you’re done having kids, or…maybe not..?” I smiled and said, “Nah, we’re done. 🙂” And it was as if they released a huge sigh of relief and then a big smile lit up on the mom, as she chimed in, “Us too!” We chatted, laughed, and rejoiced in finding another One and Won family. Their little boy was so outgoing and sweet to wish my daughter a happy birthday. As we parted ways, I saw him hug his mom and say, “This was the best. day. ever!” And I’m not sure why this stuck with me but it just felt so heartwarming to know other people are content with this life. We didn’t even go into detail about our reasons why. And there was no need to. But it felt nice to feel a solidarity in seeing other happy trios too. ❤️ #oneandwon #oneanddone
