I know some people will go crazy seeing this post but it has to be said. Too many people have too many opinions on correct boxing. Correct boxing in my opinion is to a certain degree whatever works for the individual. You’ve probably heard these before:
“Never drop your hands”
“Never step back in a straight line”
“Never square up”
“Never let the southpaw get outside foot position”
The list goes on and on, we can do this forever. But the fact is that most people don’t know shit about boxing. Most people who have the most to say have never fought inside the boxing ring before, nor have they coached and cornered a match before. Most people are some randoms who are hating from their couch. Hell, even some of the coaches out there don’t know what they’re saying half the time. If you’re a true student of the sport, open your eyes and broaden your mind. Have an open mind to all the information out there. Simply study film from some of the great boxers out there. Honestly go watch some Floyd Mayweather Jr. arguably TBE. His ability to adapt and choose the right tools for the job is incredible. You can find instances of him fighting with his hands down, with a high guard, with a low guard, with the Philly shell, squaring up in the pocket, sitting on the ropes, stepping back, pulling back, leaning back. It’s not just Floyd, watch other boxers. Hell just go watch some boxing, and I mean really watch the boxing. Pay attention to all the details. There are certain advantages to doing things a certain way, they come with their own set of disadvantages too! Understand the risks, choose the correct tool for the job. Deepen your tool box.
