The city of Philadelphia, PA recently named a street after Bro. Herbert P. Douglas.
Bro. Douglas, Iota Phi 1950, just celebrated his 100th birthday this year and has achieved great feats as both a track athlete and a member of the football team. He won four intercollegiate championships in the long jump and one in the 100-yard dash. In 1945 he became the second African-American to score a touchdown against Notre Dame.
In the 1948 London Summer Olympics, he was the bronze medalist in the long jump with a 24-foot, 9-inch leap. He is the oldest living African-American Olympic medalist. Later, he founded the Jesse Owens International Trophy Award, honoring the most outstanding amateur or Olympic athlete in the world.
