Looking for good holiday alternatives to #Italy? Why not try Lake Ohrid, in Macedonia (pictured)?
The whole of Lombardy and much of Piedmont is off-limits until at least April 3, which means Lake Como, Lake Iseo, Lake Maggiore and most of Lake Garda are now out of reach. But Europe has other lake districts still open for business.
Switzerland has more than 800 lakes, with the big-hitters including Lucerne, Geneva, Thunersee and Brienzersee. William Cook, a regular contributor to Telegraph Travel, recommends making Lausanne your base. “It has pretty much everything you’d want for a weekend city break: antique architecture, lively nightlife, decent grub. The location is spectacular, on the loveliest part of Lake Geneva, and it is easy for Britons to reach by rail, being under four hours from Paris by TGV. The quaint market town of Vevey and the glitzy resort of Montreux are both a short boat ride away, or you can hop on a ferry to the belle époque spa town of Evian.”
For something more offbeat, there’s North Macedonia – which, as of March 9, has only reported three cases of coronavirus. The twin lakes of Ohrid and Prespa offer the chance to discover old amphitheatres, Byzantine frescoes and medieval imperial redoubts, while the lofty Galicica National Park promises hiking and biking opportunities. Wizz Air offers direct flights to Ohrid from Luton.
