I made this for all black disabled bodies and especially for black queen and disability activist @crutches_and_spice last night, she didn’t ask for it, I just did it in solidarity with my black disability community. I’ll continue to create and participate in virtual uprising and protest as long as there is unrest. I have found strength in my own disability having been diagnosed with Graves’ disease at age 20 and also being the parent of a 7 year old Black Autistic son. I believe true design allyship can only come from designing with the Disability community and I hope this symbol can be instrumental in reigniting much needed dialogue about Disability Justice within the Black Disabled Community helping to shift stigmas while aiming to eradicate racist and ableist media. #Repost @crutches_and_spice

We cannot talk about #blacklivesmatter without talking about disabled black lives. About half of those who experience police violence are disabled. This is particularly true of black people with mental illness, autism and deafness. We know the egregious history of race science and eugenics that sought to diagnose blackness and “treat” it. That if you could label disabilities to attributes that were uniquely black, you could potentially dehumanize, demean and control black people. I know the rates of black disabled people, people with preexisting conditions in this country. This history has meant that many black people denounce disability because claiming it can confirm the things whiteness tried to diagnose us as to assert their supremacy. Regardless, I see you. Whether you see yourself as part of my community or not, I will fight for and affirm your life. #blackdisabledlivesmatter. .
