Stunt. Driver. Have two words put together ever garnered such awe and social validation of cool? “Well, Astronaut is a cool job! But if you ever ask one what they do, it’s a lot of math!” laughs Sera Trimble (@trims440).
“I will admit that all of the things I sensationalised about being a stunt driver, like ‘oh man, stunt driver! That sounds so fun!’ That it turns out now, 14 years later it’s a totally different career,” she says. “The reality is, it’s a job where you’re put in high-risk positions that could hurt a lot of people. Imagine a safe distance you would want to do something with a car, like a slide or a doughnut or something. Now put people around it, and famous actors, and expensive gear, then imagine you’re sitting there getting ready to do whatever you’re there to do, and the director watching you through a lens says, ‘ok now everyone, take three steps closer to the car!’”
Sera comes across as humble and self-deprecating, but make no mistake, she is one of the most sought-after drivers in Hollywood, with a CV that reads like a Cannes Lion Awards shortlist and an origin story that sounds like it was written in the stars. Like all good Hollywood stories, the rise to fame was not without hard work – Sera spent her early days as a production assistant and lackey on sets, scrounging all the coin she could to put towards driving courses.
Now, out of all her vehicles, she says, her 1986 G-body 911 is her most driven; “When I got it, it was gross. I hated the colour, it had decals and stickers all over it, and it was very cheesy and tacky,” she says. “It was not something that I was like, ‘yes!’ But it was a car that for the money I had, I knew would be a good driving car.”
Sera ripped the stickers off and set to work transforming it; “I didn’t want a pretty, original condition Porsche, and I love that it doesn’t have any chrome on it,” she says. “I just want easy-breezy, rock-chipped steezy. I don’t care as long as it drives down the road and its wheels don’t fall off. I will beat it up and enjoy it.”
