#Legend Rest In Peace, Sam Jones. I had the honor of sitting next to and chatting with him at brunch one day 3 1/2 years ago at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with a few other NBA Hall of Famers. One thing I surmised, among his other wonderful qualities - he was so consistent. He played for the Celtics the entire duration of his 12 year NBA career. He was a substitute teacher for 30 years post his NBA playing days. And this is incredible - I remember him saying how long he had been married to his wife, to the day❣️60 years, 6 months, 24 days, at the time. How many men do you know can say that about his own marriage? Jones was a prolific shooter, and used it to devastate my beloved Lakers in the 1962 NBA Finals when he scored five of the Celtics' 10 overtime points in Game 7 to help the Celtics win its fourth straight title. And again in 1969 in his very last NBA game, Game 7 of the 1969 NBA Finals when he scored 24 points. A game, I’m sure Jerry West hasn’t forgotten, and one in which he probably still gets depressed when he thinks about it.
