In May of 2003 I accompanied Paul McCartney to Moscow to perform at Red Square with his current band. It was a very special concert for Paul because he discovered just how popular The Beatles were in the 60’s when The Beatles and Western Rock n’ Roll was all but forbidden in Soviet Russia. But that didn’t stop bootleg records from being smuggled into the country creating a huge underground fan base. Some even suggested that the band played a major role in bringing down communism. While this may be seen as an exaggeration, the Beatles indeed had a major following in Russia.
It was before his concert in Red Square that Paul was visited in his dressing room by the former Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev. The two iconic figures of the 20th century stood and chatted for a few minutes and on his way out Gorbachev gifted Paul with a copy of his newest book.
I am sad to report of the passing of Mikhail Gorbachev at the age of 91. He is the leader credited with the fall of the Soviet Union and the dismantling of the Berlin Wall.
It was truly a magical moment for this photographer and one I am happy to share with you.
