It isn’t coincidental that the words 'ecology,' 'ecosystems,’ and 'economics' share the root name “eco," which means 'home.' Every aspect of our livelihood depends on nature, our most significant home. Though, too often, the environment is seen as a small fraction of the economy. We know the trouble of climate collapse is immense, but collectively, how do we act as if it were true? In very real ways, the crisis thwarts our rights and opportunities. Yet, it’s not apparent from our global behaviour that we've fully grasped the substantiality of it. Aggressive human activity—driven by a compulsive economic model—has burdened the environment with grappling with its resilience and equilibrium, bringing us to face a confluence of existential threats to the bearings of who we are, how we live, and our accountability to the world we’ve inherited.
Perhaps we can take a deeper look at our moral reckoning with ecology and fundamentally harmonize, in full context, all forms of life and the earth’s vitality as part of our aspirations for freedom and prosperity. Perhaps we can't conceive a path forward without rethinking how we see the economy—how it was built on arrangements aggravated by anthropogenic activities. Maybe pledging allegiance to truth rather than a false narrative presuming our inevitable doom might be a step.
Pursuing replenishment and renewal is far too critical of practices to be left to a few—or an individual. The transformative work rarely relies on polishing our abilities to buy green, eat local food, compost, or critique institutions—it requires diving into inquiries of interior life that ultimately form the foundation of how we care for our commonplace and move through it together.
Being a part of a vision—a humane, revolutionary one—requires a broader (and more profound) pattern of attention that connects to our inherent value as human beings (not consumers) and asks, "how can we make this better for all beings?"
