Acne In Skin of Color//👶🏿👩🏽👩🏾🦱👨🏿🧑🏼🦰👨🏼🦰👨🏾🦳
#Neutrogenapartner
The causes of #acne are the same across all skin tones but, when it comes to skin of color, acne tends to be associated with:
⭐️Increased inflammation: Histological evidence points to more intense inflammation of acne lesions in darker skin tones. This heightened inflammatory response may be one of the major reasons even mild to moderate acne in darker skin tones is associated with hyperpigmentation
⭐️Hyperpigmentation: While lighter skin tones are associated with redness or post inflammatory erythema, darker skin tones tend to be associated with post inflammatory hyperpigmentation which can actually be even more distressing than acne lesions.
⭐️Scarring: Because darker skin types tend to have more active fibroblasts, they are also prone to scaring that may sometimes lead to keloid formation.
In building a skincare routine for acne in skin of color, it’s very important to use evidence based ingredients that target the underlying cause with ingredients such as topical retinoids (the gold standard topical medication for mild to moderate acne), benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, salicylic acid, azelaic acid and glycolic acid.
If acne is not getting better with over the counter skin care, always seek dermatologist intervention to avoid delay in treatment that can result in tougher discoloration and scarring.
