Two steps to achieve a dolly zoom effect in your landscape videos! With @jpm_productions_ / “I have always had a passion for film, and when I was younger, I started doing videos as a hobby. I would do tongue-in-cheek videos with friends on my phone, and it got to a point where I wanted to take things further and decided to invest in proper equipment and see what came of it. So I got the Fujifilm XT-4 and instantly fell in love with it. It was an upgrade from filming on my phone and triggered the snowball effect. I realized I wanted to make a thing of this and decided to take it traveling to Iceland, Rome, and Copenhagen. Then I discovered DJ, and I got the DJI MiniPro3 which was perfect for traveling.
For my first trip abroad with a drone, I knew I wanted to visit the Dolomites, and that is where I captured this shot. I decided to spend the night next to this valley, and now I can say it was worth sleeping in the back of a van in sub-zero temperatures waiting for the sun. As I waited for the perfect moment, I thought about the “dolly zoom” effect and how nice it would be to capture this scenery with such a technique. I first saw this effect in Jaws, and it blew my mind:
(1) Essentially, a dolly shot is a filmmaking technique that can help you add depth to a scene by simulating a spatial warp, shrinking or extending distances behind the subject, and is a great way to introduce tension, unease, disorientation, or vertigo.
(2) This technique is slightly different from zooming in or out into your subject as it goes one step beyond. We define zoom as a magnification of the image, creating the illusion that the camera is getting closer to the character. But with a dolly shot, the camera moves toward the subject also.
(3) Thus, to achieve this effect with my drone, I had to consider two steps: forward-moving my drone + zooming out. Sometimes simple editing techniques are the best, and you can achieve a similar result in post-production. However, I recommend applying this technique shooting on location for better results!” @nomadict: In which other movies have you identified the “dolly zoom” effect? ✨⬇️
