The apex predator watches from above the peaks.
A mountain goat’s survival depends on its ability to scale sheer cliffs and technical terrain with ease. When threatened, they’ll run to the sketchiest zone on the mountain, making them untouchable to predators—except one. With a near 8-foot wingspan, golden eagles are a known predator of first-year mountain goat kids, but this eagle decided to take a serious look at this lone adult goat before passing it by.
Witnessing a moment like this is one of many reasons why hunting is uniquely engaging. We pursue something much deeper than a notched tag. It’s about living directly beside wildlife while being fully alert and curious. We strain our necks and eyes while studying every detail of a mountainside. We seek obscure pockets of country that no one would ever think of visiting. We tirelessly research, obsess over possibilities, and then explore. And every once in a while, we see something truly rare.
