Names: Lauren and Chase Ages: 37 and 4 Mama’s Occupation: Founder of a non profit, 1st Impression Harlem @1stimpressionharlem Q: What is it like to be a mama to girls nowadays? A: It’s a lot. The world is very heavy right now and all we can do is try to keep things as light as possible for our children. We’ve made huge strides with female empowerment, but I want my daughter to always prioritize humility, compassion, and a sense of humor above all else. Q: What are your biggest wishes for the future of your daughter? A: I don’t want her to ever know that I struggled. I don’t want her to have ever realized that money was tight. I want her to think that lockdown was a blast. I want her to have felt special during the Black Lives Matter movement. I want her to see power in protests and respect for the work it takes to protect human rights. I want sustainable practices to come natural for her. I want reading to always feel like a great escape. Q: What kind of world would you like to leave for the next generation? A: I hope that the country comes to the realization that we have everything we need when we share what we have, and to look at the past and the elderly as a treasure trove of answers. Q: How can you best serve as a role model to your girls? A: I’m fully present and intentional about it. I never want to be the “I could’ve, should’ve or would’ve but I couldn’t because I became a mother” type of mom. My daughter enhances my life and brings out parts of me that I never knew existed. I want her to learn from me that no matter what way it turns out, life is good because you make it good.
