I grew up devouring books on the heroic ventures of the world’s best-known ocean explorers. But the window they offered into the mysterious deep was only a fraction of our ocean’s story. It wasn’t until I first began to work as a conservationist that I finally met the voices missing from my childhood bookshelf: the wayfinders who still practice the art of navigating by hand and stars, the legendary mermaids of Timor-Leste, and village elders who could recall life before industrial fishing. Little by little, the story of our seas was revealed through the histories of those who have been silenced from the global conversation on ocean solutions. Back then it was just me recording narratives with my camera and notebook. Today, I have my entire @SeaLegacy team working to elevate a much more holistic understanding of our planet and the community-based solutions that will save it.
