How to heal an irregular cycle:
- Stop skipping meals and restricting calories: chronically restricting calories or skipping meals is a major stressor on your body. Over time, it can suppress reproductive hormones and lead to an irregular or missing cycle. Your body needs enough energy and nutrients to support a healthy menstrual cycle.
- Lift weights consistently: I swapped out daily high-intensity cardio for 3–5 days of strength training. Lifting weights helps improve insulin sensitivity, support blood sugar regulation, and reduce stress hormones—all of which support hormone balance and a more regular cycle.
- Prioritize stress management: a constantly stressed body is a dysregulated body—chronic stress can delay or even stop ovulation, which can lead to irregular periods or missing them altogether (amenorrhea). Finding ways to calm your nervous system (like journaling, walking, breathwork, or setting boundaries) can help your hormones stay more balanced and your period more regular.
lastly, I want to give a little tough love and remind you that if you don’t have a regular menstrual cycle, then the main priority should not be getting abs or leaning out right now —I made that mistake early on in my fitness journey and it made things so much harder for my body as I tried to lose weight, build muscle, etc. I didn’t know it at the time, but i’m glad that I know these things now so I can share them with you 🫶🏼
