“Faith favors the bold.”
I had the opportunity to stand on the Areopagus, where Paul gave his sermon to the people of Athens. Acts 17:16-34 recounts the boldness of Paul, and how he preached to a population that had never even fathomed the idea of a God like the one he worshipped. It said he debated with many Epicurean and Stoic philosophers, who brought him to Areopagus. He preached to people who disagreed with him, about a God no one had heard of, in a place historically known for violence. Staring down the cliffs of the Areopagus, I wonder how terrified I would have been to be in Paul’s shoes.
Yet God favored Paul. Athenians converted to Christianity, the Roman Empire recognized Christianity in the 4th century, and many temples of worship to pagan gods converted into Christian churches. God favored Paul’s bold faith.
To this day, Christianity remains in Athens. A place known for their warriors and Greek mythology, yet also a place where a Christian revolution took place. All because of Paul’s boldness in faith.
I wonder where our schools, our work, our country and our world would stand if we chose to have a faith like Paul.
