💚 you’ve just had a baby:
—maybe they arrived v@ginally, maybe abdominally....
—maybe labor was EASY/QUICK, maybe it was long and drawn out
—maybe you have a small brood of toddlers waiting for you at home, maybe this is your first delivery, maybe this is your rainbow baby
—the possibilities of how you feel PHYSICALLY and EMOTIONALLY may be easily predictable based on any of the above scenarios OR, frankly, you may have had a fairly easy delivery and yet feel emotionally and physically bereft—-meaning: ANYTHING GOES...
!!️and YET, I hear, every day, from MANY mamas, variations on these words: “I GAVE IN last nite and sent the baby to the nursery to rest”
!?️this sentiment, this feeling, OFTEN a mere HOURS or at most 1-3 DAYS after finishing ONE PART of the marathon of what it is to have a baby. That is: The pregnancy and the delivery—the physically and emotionally gut-punching yet AMAZING BEGINNING of the parenting journey—they are filled with (like all in life) aspects that are MISERABLE AND MAGICAL!
❓so WHY, when one is in the very beginning of the NEXT LEG of the journey, having just BECOME a parent—all while still HEALING from the delivery—why oh WHY are so many of us groomed to believe we should NOT accept help, NOT send our baby to the nursery to get REST—the VERY. THING. WE. NEED. TO. HELP. HEAL!!
💙in the ancient (and still in some socialites) times we had our “village” who would help us: OUR role would be to FEED our baby and the village would then take the baby so that we could rest—ALL why serving us soups and nurturing us with healing salves (40 days, right?) whcih meant we were NOT MEANT to walk this part of our journey ALONE. IN A ROOM. With (at best!) a lovely partner who is equally green at this task OR exhausted from the previous legs of the trip AND a live, human baby!
💙so I OFFER you, oh new mamas, if you WANT TO KEEP your little cherub right next to you in the hospital after you’ve birth—then OF COURSE you should honor that—but only if YOU are choosing it NOT from a space of fear, anxiety or GUILT! IF, on the other hand you feel that you need SLEEP, REST, QUIET for a few hours at a time—then nurture yourself—and sleep;)
