A couple of months into the pandemic, I received an email from @mdotcallahan with a project proposal. I have followed her on social media for quite some time and have been a big fan of her practice. I grew up with the women in my family sewing and have always been drawn to textile work.
Meg was making three quilts and sending them to three photographers. The only ask was to live with the quilt and document it over a year. If you know me, I genuinely love open-ended collaborative work like this. What I didn’t realize was how this project would become my lifeline.
The first six months into the pandemic was a weird time. There were days for me that were such dark spots. I stopped working, I stopped making, I stopped hanging with friends, it felt like the whole world just stopped. I had a health scare that projected me into not taking a single day for granted. We finally got out of the house, took to the road, with one child + two doggies, and the quilt she sent us. We took her everywhere with us. Sometimes Matt or I would shoot our daughter Uchu under it, and in other photos, she would capture me. It was a family affair.
Just about a year to the day after receiving our portal quilt, Meg hit me back up. I had saved all the rolls of film, eagerly waiting to develop them. She told me the gallery she worked with in NY called @colonydesign was having their first show/ opening since the pandemic hit. The theme was “Join,” and she asked if I was interested in showcasing a little piece of the body of work. I was more than stoked because I've never had the opportunity to show any work in a real gallery before. Then it just so happened that work brought Matt and me to NY, and I got to see it IRL. I love how full circle life is sometimes when you lean into it and trust. TY Meg for trusting me to be a part of this project- ill cherish this quilt and these photos forever.🌈
