One of Egypt’s best thinkers, software developer and activist Alaa Abd El Fattah, has spent most of the last decade in prison. On September 29 2019, Alaa was arrested in a massive sweep of activists. Charged with spreading false news and belonging to a terrorist organization, he was imprisoned in Torah Maximum Security 2 Prison.
On April 2, 2022, Alaa shaved his head and started a hunger strike on the first day of Ramadan. A few days later, on April 11, Alaa’s family announced that he had become a British citizen through his mother. In May he was transferred to a "rehabilitation centre" at the Wadi al-Natrun prison complex, north of Cairo. As he nears the third month of his hunger strike, the UK foreign secretary has said she is working hard to secure his release.
Although Alaa has been targeted for his prominence and ability to relay and amplify the truth through digital means, his treatment is emblematic of the plight that many Egyptian activists now face.
Events and protests around the world have recently been held to bring attention to his mistreatment and unfair sentence. UK foreign secretary Liz Truss has promised to seek his release. Follow the #SaveAlaa and #FreeAlaa tags for actions you can take to help.
