Forgiveness, grace to oneself and others, is a practice we live, a human gift to be treasured—not an achievement to be measured. It is not in any way a denial of life’s difficulties. What it does is softens the heart; heals the soul; opens our ears so that we may respond to the oppression and aggression with a deep and abiding sense of humanity. That act of forgiveness is a unique form of personal nourishment because, in a society designed to constantly tell you you’re not enough or not doing enough, forgiveness provides us with a gentle and spacious place to land, be held, and begin again. And equally, when we practice forgiving others, it acts as a vessel to remain in touch with the truth of their incompleteness, enough to believe in their capacity to change and be transformed in the face of complexity. Like empathy and compassion, forgiveness is both an intentional and voluntary choice. A choice so powerful—it opens up new horizons and uncovers possibilities that have been unseen before!
