#BlackHistoryWithTunde In honor of International Women's Day, let's celebrate the life and legacy of Marian Anderson, one of the most renowned contraltos of her time. • Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1897, Anderson overcame discrimination to become an iconic figure in the classical music world. • In 1939, Anderson made history when she performed an open-air concert at the Lincoln Memorial after being denied the opportunity to sing at Constitution Hall because of her race. Her legendary performance drew an audience of over 75,000 people and cemented her place as a symbol of the struggle for civil rights and equality in America. • Throughout her career, Anderson performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. In 1955, she made history again as the first Black woman to sing a named role at the Metropolitan Opera, performing as Ulrica in Verdi's "Un Ballo in Maschera." Her groundbreaking performance shattered racial barriers in the opera world and paved the way for future generations of Black opera singers. • In addition to her trailblazing accomplishments in the arts, Anderson was also a passionate advocate for music education. She also used her platform to support young musicians and promote the importance of the arts in society. • On this International Women's Day, let's honor the contributions of women like Marian Anderson, who have overcome adversity and used their talents to inspire and uplift others. • Follow @Babatunde_Hiphopera for more cultural insights, history, music, and more! • #internationalwomensday #womenhistorymonth #blackhistory #mariananderson
