Soaring on upturned wings, a mobula ray launches itself in a bid to touch the sky. It reaches an impressive 6 ft before finally losing momentum and plunking back through the surface with a loud splash, rejoining the throng of fins and tails below. Mobulas tend to congregate by the hundreds, even thousands, in the Gulf of California off the coast of Baja. We don’t know for sure what compels them to leap and flip through the air, but it likely has something to do with finding mates, communicating with other rays, or possibly escaping stubborn parasites. Or perhaps they just need a moment of respite from the constant chaos of traveling in big schools. In any case, I find their acrobatics stunning and was content to photograph them with my @sonyalpha 1 camera for hours under Mexico’s tropical sun.
