I was on a shoot in London a few months ago, and my grandmother said to me, “Oh! I have a cousin that lives there. Could you pay her a visit?” And so I did. This is my grandmother’s cousin, Joan. They didn’t grow up together, and I think the term “cousin” is kind of loose, but how beautiful that these two women now in their 80s and 90s found each other and kept in touch their whole lives. The families made their way out of Ukraine at different times over the past century, and they now live in different countries. But they are so remarkably similar, too. They look alike. They smile alike. And they share a certain joy that I’ve only seen emanate from people that have lived through a lot.
