Wandering the charred landscape, a herd of horses returns home after surviving a deadly forest fire. When I worked on this story for @NatGeo with @PaulNicklen, people thought it was a stretch to tie the worsening fires to the changes in precipitation brought forth by a warmer ocean. However, with this year’s brutal heat waves, fires, and devastating floods, it has become painfully clear that the planet is changing faster than we can understand or prepare for. Anyone still denying or ignoring climate change should be held accountable by those already suffering its devastating consequences. Accountability for our climate means reducing emissions, investing in carbon-sequestering ecosystems, and supporting and empowering the people hit hardest by rising sea levels, fires, and floods.
