2020: I’m going to end the archive here. Well, at least the explainers. I’m too close to 2020-22. We don’t need another person retelling their story of losses during this decade.
I’ll continue sharing 21 and 22 without words but, in essence:
• 2020 was about nature, wholesomeness, friendship, family, and creating a few new creative worlds
• 2021 was about friends, shadows, exploration, loneliness, and taking chances
• 2022 was about Next Wave artists, connecting with families, and going off road
I’ve worried people wouldn’t understand my shifts in work, styles, casting, locations and other details but this exercise may help others understand and appreciate changes. My life may go through a decline or growth which may reflect on the work one way or another - life is always full of ups and downs! If you’re a fan and you don’t like or understand something I’m doing or not doing, just wait it out! It will always evolve. I reserve the right to not explain myself or my work. I’m my own worst critic.
For artists with some tenure: I’d encourage you do this archive exercise as well. I learned a TON from this series and it’s opened a lot of conversations.
New artists will always get attention and I think we all agree that’s a great thing. It keeps us on our toes and helps them. And it looks like we will be forever hearing stories about both artists who broke through. But there are far more underrated mid career artists who keep pushing and it would be great to hear your stories too.
My tips:
• be real - recognize the full spectrum of ups and downs
• be open to learning more about yourself. You will gain more if you’re open
• don’t worry about fitting it all in. It’s impossible
• don’t spill tea - we all have been wronged and we don’t need names. Those who spill tea have messy laps and sloppy homes
• take your time. Organize your archive and reflect
• Do it for yourself. Use it to help others, but do this to grow.
I promise doing a public archive will help you and your work grow. You’ll be rewriting your own narrative to yourself and see things you never noticed before. It’s beautiful.
Thanks to everyone who has supported this series! I’ll update in a few years
