@just_janyah - Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is truly a remarkable experience. Did you know there are roughly 1000 Mountain Gorillas left in the world? It is needless to say the ongoing conservation effort is extremely important to prevent extinction!
Facts about Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda:
◼️ My Gorilla Trekking experience was at Volcanoes National Park which is about 2.5 hours from Kigali International Airport.
◼️ Permits are required and should be booked months in advance. A passport, a permit and a negative PCR must be shown the day of the trek. You must also wear a mask.
◼️ The cost of a single permit is $1500 USD. Although it is expensive, the cost goes towards conservation efforts and a portion goes toward helping to support the local community.
◼️ Gorillas live in families called groups headed by the Silverback. I visited the Amahori family, which has 24 gorillas total.
◼️ The trek can be anywhere from 2 to 7 hours; do plan accordingly (snacks, water, etc).
◼️ Once you reach the group of gorillas you will have about an hour with them to take pictures and videos.
◼️ Porters are available at $10 USD per person to assist with carrying your bags, cameras, etc. It's also a great way to support the local community.
