Harp seal pups spend their first few weeks taking long, luxurious naps in snowdrifts and drinking their mothers' milk. I always felt it was a lovely way to begin life on this big, wondrous planet. However, their window of blissful living is short-lived. After about two weeks, their mothers start to wean them and their transformation from dozy furballs to sleek adults begins. After they are weaned, their mothers return to the sea, leaving their offspring on the sea ice for about 6 weeks. Over time, their downy fur gives way to a spotted coat adapted to life below the surface.
