I was thrilled to be included on another episode 🎤 of @drmarkhyman’s The Doctor’s Farmacy to talk 🗣 about some surprising levers of metabolic health. Research from The Lancet has shown that deaths attributable from air pollution deaths are rising rapidly.
The Doctors’ Farmacy is his podcast 🎙 about the ever-increasing burden of chronic disease, primarily driven by our food and food system. This is perpetuated by agricultural 👩🏻🌾, food, and health care policies that don’t support health.
Here are a few topics we covered ⬇️
✔️ Why obesogens are bad 🫤 for metabolic health:
- Obesogens are metabolism-disrupting chemicals that can directly increase fat mass and contribute to obesity.
- These are chemicals like bisphenols, phthalates, parabens, non-steroid estrogens, flame retardants, and more.
- They are in our plastics, food preservatives, furniture 🛋, medications 💊, clothing 👚, etc.
✔️ Why sunlight 🌞 is good for metabolic health:
- Our eyes 👀 are the brain’s access port to natural light.
- By getting sunlight first thing in the morning 🌅 and avoiding excess artificial light near bedtime 🛏, we signal to our brain 🧠 the time of day and set our bodies up to time genetic and hormonal signals appropriately.
✔️ Why micronutrients are crucial for metabolic health 🍓 🥑:
- Each of your roughly 37 trillion cells can contain a thousand or more mitochondria, each with innumerable proteins embedded into their membranes that act as tiny molecular machines.
- For those proteins to function correctly requires adequate levels of specific micronutrients, which we get from food.
- These vitamins, minerals, trace metals, and antioxidants are crucial links 🔗 in chain reactions that regulate every part of your body’s metabolism.
✔️ And, as a bonus, we even some strategies for longevity 🧓
