#DoreenLynetteGarner “Take This and Remember Me,” 2022 silicone, steel pins, urethane foam, wood, fabric, hair weave, weapon and tattoo ink 65 x 108 x 5 in On view in “Revolted” @newmuseum through October 9 Among its themes, “REVOLTED” explores the conceptual intersection between Christian symbolism and life and death onboard the slave ship. In doing so, Garner accentuates the contradictions and hypocrisies of the religious beliefs of enslavers and others complicit in the slave trade, who espoused a humanism that was simultaneously universalizing and exclusionary. Garner’s Take This and Remember Me reconfigures Michelangelo’s genesis narrative into one of attempted emancipation. Reframing the encounter between God and Adam into that of a young Black girl handing a weapon to an elder, the work references the origin of the New Britannia rebellion, wherein a group of young, enslaved boys onboard the ship snuck carpenter’s tools to the men held captive in the lower decks. - Vivian Crockett, @sharpwhitebackground Curator, New Museum, New York @the_silicon_don
