Fado is a traditional music from Portugal. I was not really familiar with it until I did the music for Ian Griffith's 2023 Resort collection for Max Mara held in Lisbon on Tuesday. Ian wanted Fado and there was no better way to learn about this music than from Fado Superstar Carminho! I was immediately knocked out by her voice. Wow! Such power and passion! As we started working on the music, I was blown away by her talent of course but also by her willingness to collaborate and experiment. She set the guidelines right away though and completely X-ed everything that I thought I was going to do. (Like put it over a Trip Hop beat). "If you add a House beat or Trip Hop beat, it's a House track or a Trip Hop track. It's not Fado", Carminho declared. Of course she was right and I had to think outside the box. (Thank you Alberto Bravin for the beautiful strings!!) Later, after the show I was talking with Carminho and her artist husband. They were throwing out names like Alan Vega, Thurston Moore, Debbie Harry and Richard Hell as inspirations. What the what?!! OMG! Carminho is a Punk! The rawness, the power. I totally get it now! Carminho is a very unusual and VERY talented artist. I can't wait to hear her new album.
