Maybe inspired by this poem, Walter Benjamin wrote in ‘One-way Street ‘ something that gives me chills... “Only he, who can contemplate his own past as a product of coercion and need can use it to full advantage in every present situation. For what one has lived is at best comparable to a beautiful statue that has had all its limbs broken off in transit, and that now renders nothing but the precious block out of which the image of one’s future must be carved“
