Emirate City, a complex of more than one hundred apartment blocks between Kabul's international airport and the mountains that separate it from the Shomali Plain to the north. Alongside another similar complex, Khwaja Rawash, the mini cities are modern equivalents of those built by the Soviets in the 1980s to house government workers and which, even 40 years on, retain hints of their Communist past. On a quick visit earlier this week, I didn't spot a single Talib. Perhaps Emirate City will retain some of the isolation from the busy city on the other side of the airport that its residents enjoyed prior to the arrival of the insurgent fighters into the future.
