His name is Joshua,@Joshua105 known to some as “duct tape” but he will always be “North Face Tortilla” to me. 2019, in the garage of Scout and Frodo’s home, the first person I met was Joshua, his name was on the hat he wore. The following morning we were in a car together heading to the Mexico/US border to begin our Pacific Crest Trail hike. He was tiny, dressed head to toe in North Face gear, with a heavy pack full of camera equipment, and I couldn’t keep up!! But we stopped for lunch together on that first day and another hiker, Rich from Seattle, shared a tortilla with Joshua. This is the first time Joshua tried a tortilla.....and the name was born! He didn’t like it at first, “it’s too long” he said. As the trail started putting miles and days between us I wondered if I would see him again. Word spreads on trail from hiker to hiker like a game of telephone and every now and then I would hear the name “North Face Tortilla” in conversation and a smile would cross my face. The trail has a funny way of juggling up hikers and I found myself now hiking alone after 200 miles. I ran into two other hikers I had met at Scout and Frodo’s and we started out together as we neared Mission Creek. On the other side of the Creek was a hiker named Kevin “Wildling” from Germany and a tiny hiker dressed head to toe in North Face gear with his name on his hat!! We would spend the next week hiking together, splitting an air B and B in Big Bear and making a taco feast. Joshua was in charge of flipping the tortillas of course!! That was a week that I like to say saved my hike. I took an extra zero day in Big Bear and would not see Joshua again..... He had to be airlifted out of Mt Whitney with frost bite on his toes and returned home to Hong Kong. A year later I got a text message from a number I didn’t recognize. It said “Dad, I’m back”. A quick wave of panic went through me, laughed and I returned the message, “Joshua”?? You see, Joshua also had a name for me, “American Dad” and a new name was born that day, “Hong Kong Son”. Are you confused yet??!
