Components to capture candid and visually strong content! With @isakstockas / “Time is closely linked to many different aspects of our human experience and shapes how we think, act, and feel. Time is also crucial in photography as it allows us to control exposure or the amount of light that reaches the camera’s sensor. Components such as light quality, combined with shape and color, as well as finding that split second of a moving subject that best represents the scene, has helped me to capture candid yet visually strong images overall: (1) Light. I believe that you can take a great landscape photo in all conditions. It all comes down to your focal point. During bright daylight, you might not be able to get the same vibrant or moody photos as you can at sunrise, sunset, or on a foggy day. However, you can focus more on the harsh shadows, embracing the conditions and changing your composition accordingly. In any case, being conscious about how light affects your subject is crucial. And always remember, showcasing the importance of light and the surrounding conditions can be done with a photograph taken at a simple location or just 5 minutes from where you live. (2) Colors and textures. Using color theory can be incredibly helpful. Sometimes it can help to pull the hues of colors closer together while editing to make the image feel less messy or using complimentary colors to create a pleasing look. Complementary colors are the opposite hues on the color wheel. In the case of this reel, green - from the forest - and red - from the two trucks. In addition, bringing in or out textures can also affect your image’s perception. And the following are some basic steps I generally follow to edit my content: I crop the image or video, adjusting my subject following the rule of thirds. I then add my first adjustments, which include a heavy contract curve and some basic HSL. To increase the intensity in the photo, I work on shaping the light using gradual filters, brushes, luminance intervals, and radial filters. I then add in Photoshop some edge contrast and fiddle a bit with the color contrast, and finally, in Lightroom, I add a bit of grain to even out the photo.” 🎨
